The Feldenkris Method

Reprogramming the nervous system.

Intro

When our nervous systems are in a state of burnout and exhaustion, we have become sympathetic nervous system dominant. The body is then engaged in a heightened state of anxiety and primed to react quickly through the fight or flight response.Higher level processes such as rational thinking, relaxed breathing, deep sleep, and creativity become impaired, and we succumb to a panicked response to circumstances and events.

Many people can exist in this state for years and the effect on their health and well being can be enormous.Insomnia or low quality sleep is now a worldwide epidemic. People are reporting higher levels of depression and mood disorders than ever before.Injuries become more common due to stiffness in muscles and joints creating postural abnormalities.Over time, this commonly results in severely compromised immune systems and days missed from work.

Most notably, happiness levels are lower than at any time in the previous 50 years, despite huge economic and technological advances in many areas.

So, what is the solution to this issue?

In an attempt to remedy their situation, many people resort to a variety of processes or substances to alleviate the symptoms of their anxiety.

Some of these quick fixes are useful in the short term,( such as exercise, meditation, yoga, etc) however the issue of nervous system impairment still exists. In this state of constant stress, many people report that so-called relaxation practices can actually make them feel even more overwhelmed and frustrated, especially when they fail to deal with the primary stress that continues to burden them.

In order to make real fundamental changes in the very paradigm of our being, we must attend to the source of the issue-this source is the nervous system.

The Feldenkrais Method

Feldenkrais aims to make the impossible possible, the possible easy, and the easy elegant. Feldenkrais Method helps a  person that is organized to move with minimum effort and maximum efficiency, not through muscular strength, but through increased consciousness of how movement works.

When we can engage our parasympathetic nervous system as our new norm we move from "fight or flight" reactivity to a rest and digest state of ease. Breathing becomes naturally deep and full. This, in turn, affects every system in the body, whether voluntary or involuntary. Digestion is now improved which ensures that our bodies are nurtured with abundant energy for the day.

Sleep becomes uninterrupted and of better quality. Muscles that are finally relaxed and at ease can protect the skeletal system adequately, so that movement becomes easy and natural. Correct posture is the natural extension of this process.

My purpose is to allow people to move closer to actually being creatures of free choice, to genuinely reflect individual creativity and emotion, freeing the body of habitual tensions and wired-patterns of behaviour so that it may respond without inhibition to do what the person wants.

Most importantly for high level working environments, the frontal lobes become more engaged and active as we move out of an ingrained anxiety reaction to circumstances and into a space of joyful exploration and play. This is the environment where true creativity can take flight. In this state we become uplifted, inspired and open to possibilities. Most of us will concur that our most beautiful and creative moments occur when we inhabit the body fully and flow smoothly into the action of life. This is a blissful thought-free state unencumbered by a chaotic mind or an exhausted body.

By the age of 35, most people spend 95% of their day in repeated formulaic actions. This is largely due to an exhausted nervous system which has no scope left for change or improvisation. It is unfair to expect individuals who are suffering from this state of burnout in their everyday lives to suddenly become creative geniuses during work hours. Clear, adaptive minds are engendered from internal freedom and sense of play: the ease of surrender and the boldness to make mistakes. This is extraordinarily difficult if the body is burdened with stress and the mind overwhelmed.
